Overview

CompTIA Authorized Partner Badge

Enterprise COBOL (e-COBOL) is emerging as a powerhouse for building agile and efficient enterprise applications. This versatile language offers significant advantages over its predecessor, traditional COBOL, allowing application programmers, team leaders, and analysts to build robust systems with unparalleled efficiencies. Learning e-COBOL will equip you with the skill set to develop scalable and maintainable software solutions, optimizing operational processes and driving organizational performance.

Our IBM Enterprise COBOL (e-COBOL) Programming Workshop is a five-day hands-on course that focuses on the core skills and best practices used to design, code, and maintain Enterprise COBOL (e-COBOL 4,5,6) applications.

Dive into five days of immersive learning that mixes engaging lectures with hands-on lab experience. The course is intricately designed to cover essential e-COBOL topics, including discerning the power of e-COBOL versus older COBOL languages, mastering the syntax and divisions, and exploring innovative features like internal sorts and multi-threading. You'll also delve into e-COBOL table design, best practices, and the built-in APIs for XML integration. The course also covers core topics such as array management, data access, subroutine construction, parameter passing, iterations, built in functions, internal sorting, and using e-COBOL as an object-oriented CLASS.  Led by an industry expert, you'll find the content rich with real-world applicability.

The course is structured to ensure that the skills you acquire are immediately applicable. You'll exit the course equipped to implement e-COBOL's specialized features into your projects to resolve intricate programming issues. This equips you not just as a coder, but as a strategic asset capable of steering projects aligned with organizational goals.

Objectives

This course combines engaging instructor-led presentations and useful demonstrations with valuable hands-on labs and engaging group activities. Throughout the course you'll learn how to:

  • Discern the power of e-COBOL verses older COBOL language versions
  • Recognize Best Practices and understand effective e-COBOL features
  • Recognize the Syntax and Divisions of the e-COBOL language
  • Identify the Processing Constructs of the e-COBOL language
  • Understand the built in APIs for using XML with e-COBOL
  • Code, Compile, and Run Structured e-COBOL programs
  • Utilize e-COBOL 'soft abends' vs. old COBOL dumps
  • Understand the Region/Process/Enclave structure
  • Multi-tasking; Multi-threading with e-COBOL
  • Recognize e-COBOL as an OO language
  • Utilize e-COBOL Built-In Functions

Audience

This course is designed for Application Programmers, Team Leaders, and Analysts that need to understand and to use the efficiencies of e-COBOL vs. older, less efficient COBOLs.

Pre-Requisites

To ensure a smooth learning experience and maximize the benefits of attending this course, you should have the following prerequisite skills:

  • Prior programming experience with knowledge of the mainframe TSO/ISPF environment

Agenda

Throughout the course you'll explore:

  • e-COBOL vs. older COBOL syntax, structure and efficiencies
  • (Local Storage vs. Working Storage vs. Dynamic Storage, etc.)
  • e-COBOL internal sorts; when they are good, when they are not
